It is the bromine analog of sodium hypochlorite
Sodium hypobromite in inorganic compounds with the molecular formula NaOBr. It is commonly available as the pentahydrate, so what is commonly known as sodium hypobromite has the molecular formula NaOBr.5H2O. It is a yellow-orange solid that is soluble in water. It is the Na+ salt of OBr-. It is the bromine analog of sodium hypochlorite, the active ingredient in common bleach. In practice, salts are usually present in aqueous solution. Bromine and oxygen combine to form a group called a polyatomic ion. Since the group has an overall negative charge, it readily binds to positively charged sodium ions.
