The production and distribution of generic drugs are not protected by patents. The generic pill contains the same active ingredients as the brand pill, but is identified by its chemical name rather than its brand name. A generic drug is manufactured by a certified producer, not by the manufacturer of the original drug. When a brand-name equivalent's patent expires, generic drugs can be issued. Any pharmaceutical company can obtain a right to produce and sell the original medicine after its patent expires.
